That 'It' Factor

When you're acting, it shouldn't feel like acting

That 'It' Factor

From Agent Julian, TV/Film Agent at Forward The Agency

I know, it sounds cliché, and there'll be more clichés to come in this article, trust me, but if you want to survive in this industry, you absolutely have to have 'it.'

So What Is the "It" Factor?

To state the obvious, it's not about being the loudest in the room or doing something wild to stand out. The "it" factor is about authenticitypresence, and ease. When you're acting, it shouldn't feel like acting. I'm looking for someone who's grounded, believable, and connected. I know when it's inauthentic; I know when you're acting. Ha

While most people will equate having 'it' to your appearance and persona, your work ethic holds just as much weight. The best actors train year long just like your favorite athletes do. They're prepared for quick audition turnarounds and callbacks. They're keeping they're materials fresh and up to date. They are Professional Actors

Let's talk more about your materials.

A Great Headshot Is Key

The very first impression we get from you is your headshot, and you know what they say: first impressions are everything!

This is especially important for our industry. A great headshot can open a number of doors for you, so make sure you really invest in a great photographer who understands what a Theatrical Headshot should look like.

Your headshot is your golden ticket, but it doesn't stop there. You need to make sure your Package (Headshot/Resume/Reel) looks sharp and stays up to date.

Self-Tape Tips

It's imperative to know how to self-tape correctly in this market. So here are just a few friendly reminders to better your chances:

1. Eyeline

Your eyeline should be just to the right or left of the camera — not too far off to the side and not staring down the lens. If your scene partner is too far "off-camera," we lose your face and your eyes, and that's the best part of the performance.

2. Reacting (When You're Not Speaking)

Acting doesn't stop when your line does. Some of the most powerful moments in a scene happen in the silence — in how you listen, how you react, how you stay in it. But keep it real. It's not about over-performing or making big faces. It's about staying present and letting us see you feel what's happening in the moment.

3. Lighting & Framing

If we can't see you clearly, we can't connect. Good lighting is non-negotiable. Make sure your eyes are lit, your face is visible, and your shot is framed from about waist up. Full-body shots are great for slates, but not for the performance. Keep it tight and keep it clear.

4. Distracting Backgrounds

Your tape should be about you, not what's going on behind you. That messy shelf, kitchen clutter, or busy patterned curtain? It pulls focus. A solid, neutral backdrop is best. You want to create a clean space where the only thing that draws attention is your performance. And for all things good, please change your smoke detector batteries! Yes, it happens. Don't let it be you. :)

5. Turn Your Camera Horizontal

A vertical video might be fine for TikTok, but when we pull your tape up on a casting director's TV, it only fills about one-third of the screen. Horizontal fills the whole frame — and that means we see you, which is the whole point.

6. Dominate your first 10-15 Seconds

This industry moves quickly, so don't waste a second in your tapes. Be prepared, be cool, and show them that 'it' factor that's within you. How you enter your audition is critical in keeping us engaged. Be bold; make bold choices.

Final Thoughts

Keep working, keep growing, and remember — you don't have to overdo it to stand out. Be real, be present, and bring your full self to the role. Remember to also give yourself grace. Enjoy every moment of this journey for all its worth.

Stay sharp,

Julian
